Best Practices for Custom SMS sender names: build trust and stay compliant

Written by Nitu Kaur Sabbharwal

We strongly recommend using your official business name as the sender in all communications. This reinforces your brand, builds trust, and ensures compliance with industry regulations. While custom sender names are available, they can introduce risks like confusion, legal issues, or damaged credibility.

Key benefits of using your business name

  • Trust: Clients know exactly who the message is from.

  • Compliance: Avoid potential penalties and stay within industry guidelines.

  • Brand consistency: Strengthen your brand identity with every message.

How to set your sender name

In project settings, you can set a Custom SMS Sender name:

  • Custom SMS sender must consist of only letters and digits and must contain at least one letter and maximum 11 characters. The technical term for this is "Alphanumeric Sender".

  • iOS does not support less than three characters as the Custom SMS Sender.

  • Please note that our third party SMS supplier (Twilio) does not support Alphanumeric Sender in all countries, read this article to view all supported countries. If the recipient's country does not support alphanumeric sender names at all, Qondor sends the message from a regular phone number instead.

  • Some countries require the sender name to be registered with local carriers before use, and messages from unregistered names may be blocked. Registration must be done by the owner of the name and cannot be done by Qondor. See [Tips to improve SMS delivery success] for the current list of countries and our recommendations.
